View full detailsWe will explain the e-mountain bike to you in detail!
The mountain bike has been very popular for over 40 years. For anyone who enjoys bumpy terrain and is adventurous, an e-mountain bike is the right choice.
Up until now, the only thing that has limited outdoor fun has been the feeling that “I’m knocked out and can’t do this anymore”. But thanks to modern technology, that is now a thing of the past. An e-MTB with a powerful electric motor will give you the freest riding experience you’ve ever had while e-biking. It doesn’t matter whether you ultimately decide on a fully-suspension e-bike or an e-MTB.
An e-mountain bike has a powerful electric motor and helps you overcome new hurdles that a normal mountain bike would not have been able to manage. With the help of an e-mountain bike, you will never have to give up on a hill or take extra breaks again.
With us you will find a great selection of high-quality e-mountain bikes that you can buy online at a good price. In addition to e-mountain bikes, we also offer other e-bikes such as electric folding bikes or e-trekking bikes .
What makes an e-mountain bike?
This question can be broken down into three factors that you will immediately notice on your first test ride of an e-mountain bike and which are all directly related to the technology used.
- more power
- more weight
- more robustness
It will come as no surprise that E-MTBs are more powerful, as that is the main point. But this fact has further consequences for the design of mountain bikes and their handling characteristics. Because of this higher performance, manufacturers are also using more robust frames and more stable materials, which makes the entire vehicle more robust.
The higher weight is a disadvantage in itself, which is why mountain bike fans initially ignored the electric models when the first mountain bikes with electric motors (e-mountain bikes) came onto the market.
But that has changed in the meantime. Not only because there have been significant improvements in design. It has been shown that the higher weight even leads to improved handling when mid-engines (low center of gravity, more on that below) are used. The bike feels more stable off-road and is safer to ride. And the disadvantage that the weight brings with it when starting is easily compensated for by the engine.
The potential buyer of the E-MTB variant also has to ask himself whether he wants to go with an E-Bike Fully or with a hardtail is better advised. The answer is:
That all depends on what you plan to do with the bike. Read more about the differences between a full suspension and a hardtail in the following section and which model is best suited for whom.
Features of an e-mountain bike
- Tires : Like normal MTBs, e-mountain bikes also have a good profile, which allows them to ride on rough terrain. The rims are also very stable.
- Frame : Since MTBs were developed for uneven paths, the frame is particularly stable and the bike is either front-suspended ("hardtail") or fully suspended ("fully").
- Not street legal : Most mountain bikes are not StVZO compliant. This is due to a lack of equipment, such as lights. If you want to use the mountain bike in everyday life, you should pay attention to the street legality when buying it!
- Gear shift : While most mountain bikes have an integrated derailleur, there are also MTBs with a hub gear.
- Brakes: Most mountain bikes have hydraulic disc brakes.
Technical details of the electric bike mountain bikes
Since e-mountain bikes usually weigh more due to the built-in electric motor and batteries, MTBs without a motor are usually smaller and more flexible.
However, e-bikes make up for this apparent disadvantage with an increased fun factor! With these bikes, you can go on a mountain bike tour faster and with almost no effort. So even on days when you feel exhausted, nothing will stop you from taking a trip into nature!
E-mountain bikes have the same basic structure as MTBs without a motor. They usually have effective brakes installed, which offer a high level of safety.
If you like to take on longer tours, you should of course also consider the battery life. This varies between 30 and 60 km for electronic mountain bike models.
You should also consider whether the bike is approved for road use when buying it. But if you mount lights and reflectors on the bike, it shouldn't be a problem!
Who is an e-mountain bike suitable for?
The e-mountain bike is becoming increasingly popular and has long been a familiar sight on cycle paths across Europe. But who is it actually worth it for? The most obvious group is of course those who, due to age or illness, no longer have sufficient fitness or constitution to tackle long, steep hills. If someone has knee problems, for example, the motor can relieve the strain on those affected and prevent pain.
In addition to being a practical means of transportation, the mountain bike can also increase the enjoyment of riding. You can go on a trip with your E-MTB every day, even if you've had a long week! The built-in motor will give you plenty of support on your tour!
With an e-mountain bike you can go on rides in easy to technically challenging terrain, depending on the equipment. It enables sporty exercise - be it off-road, uphill or downhill. They also depend on the type or model. The emphasis is either on low weight or on greater comfort.
How much does an e-mountain bike cost?
Entry into the world of e-mountain bikes starts at around 1500 to 1800 euros. If you are looking for a fully e-bike, you will need to budget around 2600 to 3000 euros for the purchase. In this price range, the battery and motor are usually not integrated into the frame, which does not affect the function in any way, but does look a little less aesthetic.
In return, you usually get a 400-500 Wh battery, which is enough for a range of a good 100 kilometers in Eco mode. In terms of motors, sensible options are used, such as Bosch's Active Line, which offers 250 watts of power and 50 Nm of torque. This means that no incline is too steep, even with an entry-level e-MTB.
The weight in this lower price range is around 21-24 kilograms for hardtails and 22-25 kilograms for full suspension bikes. In order to be able to brake the relatively high weights safely, almost all E-MTBs are equipped with hydraulic disc brakes.
Higher quality e-mountain bikes obviously cost a little more. For the mid-range, that's around 2,500 euros for an e-hardtail and around 3,500 to 4,500 euros for an e-fully. The high-end e-hardtails start at 3,500 euros and an e-fully in the same class starts at around 4,500 euros. However, these models are also lighter. Many e-mountain bikes can also be bought online.
