With bicycle insurance, you can ride your bike safely and don't have to worry about accidents, theft or wear and tear. Insurance is a practical addition to enjoy everyday life with your e-bike without any worries.
When it comes to bicycle insurance, you can choose between different components such as theft and damage & wear and tear . You can find out which option is best for you in our article. We also answer the most frequently asked questions about bicycle insurance, explain how you can best insure your used e-bike and give you tips on how to save money on your insurance.
It is important to know that bicycle insurance is not tied to home contents insurance. Rather, it is considered an independent special insurance policy.
Your e-bike or bicycle does not necessarily have to be registered with the police for the bicycle insurance to pay. What is important is that you can prove ownership and that your e-bike or bicycle can be identified. This is very easy to do with a so-called bicycle pass.
Note : If you buy a MYVELO e-bike, you will receive a bike pass immediately upon purchase.
In addition, every bicycle or e-bike has a frame number that can be used to identify each bike. You can also have your new bicycle or e-bike coded using this frame number at the General German Bicycle Club e. V. (ADFC).
Of course, our partner can also insure used bikes without any age limit, even if you bought the bike through a private sale. Here again, it is very important that you have a suitable proof of purchase that shows the purchase price.
If the bike was bought new, wear and tear damage is also insured. This is not the case with a used bike.
Of course, it can happen that you get a Pedelec as a gift. But even then it is very important to have an original invoice for the e-bike. An invoice for permanently installed attachments that were added later is also required. Only then can you take out bicycle insurance at the new price.
Don't forget : If you buy a used e-bike, you must also be able to prove the purchase price with a corresponding purchase contract or dealer invoice. If the used bike is only to be insured for the price agreed in the purchase contract, the purchase contract is sufficient as proof and the original invoice is not required. Of course, things are different if your bike is to be insured at the new price. In this case, the original invoice for the e-bike is required in any case.
Special bicycle insurance always goes beyond the benefits of conventional household contents insurance.
Most home contents insurance policies only cover theft from enclosed spaces, such as the basement, apartment or parking space. Some insurance companies also offer a so-called bicycle clause. This can then be used to insure theft on the open street, for example.
With special bicycle insurance, however, your bicycle or e-bike is not only insured against theft. The insurer also covers repair costs in the event of accidents, wear and tear and vandalism. Therefore, insurance specifically for your e-bike is a useful addition that makes your everyday life easier in the event of theft or an accident.
Protecting your e-bike with bicycle insurance can be very helpful in everyday life. With the various types of insurance, you can choose between different modules, some of which offer you more or some less coverage. You will now find out what these are.
Theft only : The most annoying reason for buying a new e-bike is the loss of the old bike due to theft. To ensure that you are covered in this case, insurance against theft only is a good solution. The insurance will cover you if your e-bike is stolen due to theft, burglary or robbery. Many insurance companies offer worldwide coverage, so you don't have to worry about it even when you are on vacation.
Damage & wear and tear : Another way to insure your e-bike is to take out insurance with the damage and wear and tear component. If you take out this insurance, your insurance will cover the costs in the event of fire, vandalism or operating errors. Damage caused by accidents, transport or falls, as well as wear and tear repairs are also covered by the insurance.
Important : If you only select this module, theft insurance is not included.
Combination packages : If you want full insurance cover for your e-bike, it is best to choose a combination of the two options mentioned above. If your insurance includes a theft component and one for damage and wear and tear, you no longer need to worry and your insurance will cover the damage to your e-bike.
Tip : Each insurance policy has its own peculiarities that should be clarified before concluding a contract. Find out more in advance from our partner helden.de and find the right protection for your e-bike in just a few steps - easily online.
Bicycle insurance always makes sense if you don't have a separate bicycle clause in your home contents insurance that covers your e-bike. It is also important if you rely on your bicycle or pedelec every day and you also own a particularly high-quality e-bike.
Recommendation : We recommend that you always insure your e-bike. The purchase price of an e-bike is often higher than that of a conventional bicycle. In addition, the risk of damage from the expensive electronic components is higher and replacing these costs significantly more.
It doesn't matter what type of bike you own - whether it's a racing bike , mountain bike , pedelec or e-bike, above a certain purchase price, additional bike insurance is always worthwhile.
A decisive factor is what "type" of electric bike you actually own. If you own an e-bike in the classic sense of the word, you even need liability insurance for it. Just like with a moped or scooter. With this liability insurance, you will also receive your insurance number plate.
You always have the choice between a classic bicycle component of your home contents insurance or a special bicycle insurance or e-bike insurance.
Nowadays we automatically use the term e-bike when we talk about a bike with motor support. However, the devil is in the details.
Pedelec : Here the rider is supported with a maximum motor power of 250 watts up to 25 km/h. 3 Legally it is absolutely the same as a normal bicycle. You do not need a driving licence, no registration or insurance number. Furthermore, you do not need a helmet when riding and there is no age limit.
S-Pedelec : An S-Pedelec is no longer a bicycle, but belongs to the class of small motorcycles. It works the same as a normal Pedelec, but you are supported up to a speed of 45 km/h. To be allowed to ride such a fast Pedelec, you need a class AM driving license, must be at least 16 years old and also wear a "suitable" safety helmet. Big disadvantage: S-Pedelecs cannot be ridden on cycle paths. Not even if they are approved for mopeds.
E-bike: This is an electric light moped. The bike can be ridden using a twist grip or gear knob without pedaling. The e-bike (electric light moped) must not have an engine power of more than 500 watts and can only support up to 20 km/h. As with the S-Pedelec, an operating license, a moped test certificate and an insurance number plate are required.
The cost of insurance depends on various factors, such as place of residence, purchase price, type of bike (electric bike or conventional bike), frame material and scope of protection.
