Road bike : If you love the thrill of speed and long, fast tours on paved roads, then the road bike could be your perfect companion. Road bikes are optimized for high speeds on smooth surfaces - ideal for commuting on the road, training rides or sporty tours.
Mountain bike (MTB) : Are you more interested in adventurous off-road rides where gravel, roots and stones await you? Then a mountain bike is the better choice. Equipped with wide tires and suspension, MTBs offer the necessary stability and control on challenging surfaces.
Road bike : Road bikes feel at home on paved roads. The narrow tire and lightweight construction allow for high efficiency on flat terrain, while the low weight makes riding easier. However, they are less comfortable and stable on uneven roads.
Mountain bike : Mountain bikes are designed for off-road adventures. They can easily handle not only trails and singletracks, but also dirt roads or forest paths. Thanks to wider tires and suspension systems, they are ideal for rough terrain and varying surfaces.
Road bike : The position on a road bike is sporty and aerodynamic. This means that you sit more bent forward, which makes for efficient pedaling power. However, this position can be stressful on longer rides if you are not used to it.
Mountain bike : On a mountain bike you sit more upright, which ensures a more relaxed posture. This position is often more comfortable and less stressful for the back on long off-road rides. The suspension also absorbs shocks and bumps, making the riding experience more pleasant.
Road bike : Road bikes are less flexible if you want to ride on changing terrain. They are unbeatable on smooth roads, but are not really suitable for forest paths or unpaved routes.
Mountain bike : A mountain bike is versatile. Even if it doesn't reach the speed of a racing bike on the road, you can use it on asphalt and off-road. The MTB offers a high level of flexibility for everyday use and various purposes - from the way to work to off-road tours.
Road bike : Road bikes are generally easy to maintain as they have fewer parts that require maintenance. However, narrower tires are a bit more prone to punctures and the drive system needs to be cleaned and lubricated regularly , especially if you ride a lot. Read more about waxing vs. oiling here.
Mountain bike : Due to the suspension, the more robust chassis and the wide tires, the mountain bike tends to require a little more care. If you often ride on dusty or muddy trails, the chain and gears should be cleaned and lubricated regularly. The damping, possibly a dropper post and the suspension also require a little more attention.
Road bike : You usually have to invest a little more for a good road bike, especially if you value lightweight material like carbon. There are also cheaper options, but the lighter and more aerodynamic the bike, the higher the price.
Mountain bike : MTBs are also available in different price ranges, with full suspension models often being more expensive. A hardtail (front suspension only) is the cheaper choice and already offers good performance for beginners.
Wear parts can also be taken into account when planning your budget.
The decision between a road bike and a mountain bike depends on your individual preferences and requirements. If speed, efficiency and longer road rides are your priority, you will probably prefer the road bike. However, if you are looking for freedom off-road and want to explore rough terrain, then the mountain bike is your ideal partner.
Or why not the best of both worlds? Gravel bikes and cross bikes are hybrid solutions that combine the characteristics of both bikes and can cope on both roads and light terrain. If you don't want to commit to one discipline, this alternative could be exciting for you.
It's best to test both types of bikes to find out what feels right for you.
