When it comes to buying an e-bike, there are many aspects to consider, such as battery or motor power. One aspect that is often overlooked, but no less important, is the e-bike weight.
In fact, many people underestimate how much influence weight can have on the handling of an e-bike. Below we will explain in more detail what you should pay attention to when it comes to e-bike weight and what tips will help you when buying a Pedelec or e-folding bike.
Because the e-bike itself is not necessarily a lightweight means of transport, many buyers rightly ask themselves how high the permissible total weight can be. In principle, the weight of a pedelec plus the body weight of the rider and the luggage must not exceed the permissible total weight.
Therefore, when comparing different e-bikes, you have to calculate carefully - it is always good if there is still some room for improvement and you do not calculate the total weight too low.
For most e-bikes, the permissible total weight is often around 120 kg. If you also take into account that Pedelecs themselves weigh around 20 kg and that you have to factor in luggage for most trips, it quickly becomes clear that riders with a body weight higher than 90 kg should pay attention to a correspondingly higher permissible total weight.
Fortunately, there are also numerous models on the market where the weight limit is 140 kg or even 170 kg. To make things easier, the manufacturer often states directly what the maximum weight of the rider should be so that there is no risk of exceeding the permissible total weight.
Of course, the best thing for any e-bike rider is to feel weightless and to be able to move around effortlessly. But transporting an e-bike often becomes a real challenge.
This is especially true if obstacles such as stairs have to be overcome. If such aspects are important to you, you should ask yourself before buying how often and where you will probably have to transport your electric bike.
For example, do you often travel by train or do you only use the bike at home? Do you have to store it in the basement and carry it upstairs or downstairs every day? All of these questions play a role when it comes to setting the maximum weight limit for yourself - after all, you should be able to transport your electric bike safely and without any outside help.
Before you decide on a particular electric bike, pedelec or folding e-bike, it is advisable to take a test ride on a preferred model. This is the best way to find out whether the e-bike you want really meets your expectations.
When it comes to the weight of an e-bike, you should definitely take a test ride. It is important to check whether you can transport and lift the bike on your own without any problems. Even if you are cycling on straight, flat roads, you should be able to lift your e-bike or folding e-bike for at least a few seconds.
