Here are some tips on how to best travel in a group of e-bikers (or mixed groups with conventional bikes).
Good communication is essential when riding in a group. Avoid abrupt braking or changing direction without alerting the group. A quick hand signal or loud "brake!" can prevent accidents. Warnings about obstacles such as potholes, puddles or oncoming traffic should also be communicated loudly and clearly. The "spokespersons" of the group are best off riding at the front and passing on signals.
Your e-bike may accelerate faster than a conventional bike. Make sure to adjust your pace and give others enough time to keep up, especially on inclines or after bends. Especially if some participants are on non-motorized bikes, you should take their performance capabilities into consideration.
There is a sensible positioning in the group: the stronger or more experienced riders often position themselves at the front, while the less experienced riders line up further back. As an e-biker, you can easily ride at the back and act as the "tail light". That way, those who are not as fast can count on your support and you can keep an overview.
Always keep enough distance from the person in front of you - especially at the higher speeds that the e-bike allows. A good guideline is one bike length away so that you can still react in the event of sudden braking. The distance helps you to avoid unnecessary collisions and gives you the freedom to react quickly to obstacles.
There is hardly anything more frustrating than running out of battery in the middle of a ride. So check before setting off whether your e-bike is fully charged and plan routes and breaks so that you can recharge in an emergency. After all, you don't want to run out of support at the crucial moment.
The speed can vary, especially in mixed groups where there are also "normal" bikes. Since you have the advantage of electric support, you can use this to help others if necessary. If you are riding with a trailer or have luggage, you are still flexible with the e-bike and can help the others by taking luggage or offering support.
In a group, the slipstream can be an advantage. Position yourself behind others to save energy. This is less relevant for e-bikers, but especially in headwinds you will feel the relief even with motor support. If you are leading the group, be aware that you are keeping a comfortable and constant speed.
Plan regular breaks - this is not only good for you, but for the whole group. Use the time to check the battery level and the general well-being of the group. A shared snack, a short breather or simply a moment to enjoy the surroundings can strengthen the group dynamic and make the experience more enjoyable.
A group does not change the traffic rules. You are still a road user and must abide by the rules. Especially in large groups, it is important not to put the whole group at risk at traffic lights, but to ride in smaller sections if necessary.
Last but not least, don't forget to enjoy the experience! Riding together is fun and gives you the chance to experience nature and the company of other cycling friends. With an e-bike, you can relax and concentrate on the company and the fun you have together.
Riding in a group with an e-bike is a great experience - if you prepare properly and follow a few rules. Stay alert, pay attention to your fellow riders, and enjoy the shared experience!
